SmartQuarters Travelling Conference

Smart Cities - Urban Testbeds International Knowledge Exchange

Auckland (New Zealand), Melbourne & Sydney (Australia)

Overview

The Travelling Conference SmartQuarters (Smart Cities - Urban Testbeds) to New Zealand and Australia brought together a delegation from CityScienceLab/eCultureLab at HafenCity University Hamburg, the Archaeological Museum Hamburg, and the Digital Cluster Hamburg@Work.

The conference fostered international cooperation on urban testbeds, visualization and simulation of urban data, and stakeholder engagement in smart city development. In all three cities - Auckland, Melbourne, and Sydney - the delegation was integrated into workshops and public events.

Challenge

The observation of smaller urban units - squares, quarters, and cluster zones - particularly as urban testbeds, are especially well-suited to make findings, methods, and service scenarios comprehensible and relevant for transfer, thus enabling sustainable cooperation. The capture, visualization, and simulation of urban data and their connection with scientific findings is a new and very interdisciplinary field in city science.

Approach

  • Integration into existing innovation forum formats (Future Slam in Auckland, Pause Festival in Melbourne)
  • Expert workshops with selected institutions
  • Bilateral meetings and field excursions with institutions like AURIN, Queen Victoria Market Innovation District, and City Analytics Lab
